Abstract:
The accelerating pace of urbanization in recent decades has led to the incorporation of many peripheral villages into expanding urban structures a process that has produced diverse economic, social, and environmental implications for rural settlements. Meanwhile, the concept of quality of life has increasingly captured the attention of scholars in the social sciences, development studies, and social policy since the latter half of the twentieth century. This growing interest reflects a recognition that, despite rapid economic growth, issues such as poverty, unemployment, inequality, and social fragmentation have continued to intensify.
This study aims to conduct a comparative analysis of the perceived quality of life in rural settlements undergoing integration with urban areas and in independent villages of Birjand County, focusing on physical and institutional indicators. The research employs a descriptive–analytical design and adopts a comparative approach due to the inclusion of two categories of villages. Data were collected through questionnaires, interviews, and field observations. The statistical population comprised residents of villages being integrated with the city of Birjand (Hajiabad, Amirabad, and Chehkand) and those remaining independent (Bejod and Mahdiabad), selected through stratified random sampling. For data analysis, several statistical tests were utilized including the one-sample t-test, independent samples t-test, one-way ANOVA, Scheffé test, Pearson correlation coefficient, and Mann Whitney test using SPSS software.
The findings revealed that the type of village whether undergoing integration or remaining independent significantly influenced residents’ satisfaction with their perceived quality of life. Specifically, the average satisfaction level was slightly higher in villages experiencing urban integration compared to independent villages. Therefore, although the process of rural–urban integration contributes to improving living conditions and enhancing service and institutional indicators, it also entails far-reaching consequences for the livelihood systems anKeywords: Pd production patterns of rural areas. These include the reduction of agricultural lands, pressure on water resources, land-use changes, and the threat to the cultural identity of rural communities.
