Nowadays, the development of environmental crises such as water scarcity and drought has endangered rural settlements and caused a lot of economic, social, physical, and environmental problems. The purpose of the research is to study the consequences of Lake Urmia drying for the sustainability of its adjacent villages. The research was an applied, descriptive-analytical one where the data were collected via field study (questionnaires, interviews, observation) and library-based research, and analyzed quantitatively. The villages located within a 20 km radius of Lake Urmia (in Miandoab and Azarshahr) were studied. The results indicated that the east settlements were influenced more than the south settlements as a result of Lake Urmia drying. Most negative consequences in both towns were first environmental (e.g. soil salinity, reduced diversity of agricultural and food crops, and destruction of gardens and pastures) and then social (e.g. decreased cooperation of villagers, decreased social solidarity, decreased security, and increased crime). The least important influences of decrease in water level of Lake Urmia were related to economic considerations (e.g. decrease in non-agricultural job opportunities, decrease in diverse and sustainable income, job decrease, and increase in housing prices.
